Since 1908, the City of Sandusky has operated a greenhouse to grow plants and beautify our city. While the original greenhouse was replaced in 1974, two brick buildings remain on the site dating back to the 1920's.
We have been fortunate to receive funding through public and private sources to make our greenhouse more energy efficient as well as accessible to persons with disabilities. With these improvements has come a new mission.
Our goal is to provide recreational and educational opportunities for anyone interested in horticulture through programming that emphasizes access to recreation. Our work in this regard has just begun and our success will depend on the efforts of dedicated volunteers and civic-minded sponsors.
The historical significance of Washington Park's floral tradition is well documented throughout the last century. In continuing this tradition, city employees propagate over 100,000 plants every year.
The City of Sandusky is thankful for the financial support provided to make improvements to this facility including The Sandusky Erie County Community Foundation, The Kellogg Foundation, The Wightman-Wieber Foundation, The Frohman Foundation, The Mylander Foundation, Zion Lutheran Church and the Friends of the Greenhouse. [Disclaimer]
We look forward to the future as our greenhouse evolves into a place for our community to grow together.
Celebration Mound The Celebration Mound is located at the corner of Washington and Wayne Streets and is available for weekly rentals. If you are looking for that perfect way to commemorate a special birthday or anniversary, inquire about renting this beautiful floral tribute for a picture-perfect, lasting memory! Friends of the Greenhouse Committee The Friends of the Greenhouse Committee was created to help with funding and maintaining the future operations of the Sandusky Greenhouse. We are seeking volunteers interested in getting involved by planting flowers, performing minor landscaping in our downtown parks, watering flowers and generally promoting our parks. Greenhouse Endowment In 2006, the city created a Greenhouse Endowment to help preserve the existence of our Greenhouse for years to come and to ensure the future of Washington Parks as being the most unique urban parks in the State of Ohio. We have also begun collecting user fees from businesses, organizations and individuals reserving our Washington Park Floral Mounds. The fee to utilize one of these beautiful floral tributes is $500 each season. If you are interested in reserving one of these mounds, contact the Department of General Services at 419.627.5884. Palm & Fern Rentals Palm and fern rental monies are also collected and 100% of these monies are being placed into the Greenhouse endowment. We are hopeful that the citizens of our community will support our efforts to preserve and protect our Greenhouse. The historic Washington Parks are a landmark - second to none - both at the state and national levels and are a vital part of our ongoing economic development efforts to make Sandusky a place of choice to live, work and play. Questions can be referred to the Department of General Services at 419.627.5884.
